food allergy tartrazine

If you suspect that you have a food allergy to tartrazine, you're going to have to learn to read labels.

Tartrazine or "FD&C Yellow No. 5" or the "yellow peril" is a food dye or colourant used widely in commercial foods and medicinal products. It's presence in a food source should be indicated by the terms "FD&C Yellow No. 5" or tartrazine on the label.

The "yellow peril" attained infamy in a report published in 1959 which made the claim that some patients devleoped hives after taking tablets containing tartrazine. While non-conclusive, it did bring the whole issue of additives in foods to the forefront.

The following is only a "small" list of foods that may contain tartrazine:

skim milk
canned vegetables
hot dogs

In other words, it could be in any product that uses food colorings so if you have a food allergy, you better check your labels.
